Ys Seven (PSP) – no need to importWe didn’t realise it up till now but PlayStation Network is an absolute god send for Japanese role-playing fans. The PSP’s enormous success in Japan means that it plays hosts to mountains of new role-players, but because of the lack of mainstream popularity for both the genre and the console in Europe many of them never make it over here – even if they’ve been released in the U.S. Except now they do, as PlayStation Network downloads. The only problem with these games turning up in the PlayStation Store is that there’s absolutely no advertising for them. We reviewed the remake of Persona earlier in the year, but until a reader pointed it out we had no idea this was on there (and it seems Z.H.P.: Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman, which we had to go to the trouble of importing). AdvertisementSo what exactly is Ys then?

Steam

Well, technically it’s a – although as you’d imagine the games don’t worry themselves too much about historical or literary accuracy. In the gaming world the Ys series started life on Japanese home computers back in 1987 and the only ones that have ever been released in Europe before are Ys VI: The Ark Of Napishtim on the PlayStation 2 and PSP and spin-off Ys Strategy on the Nintendo DS.During the more than two decades of its existence there’s been a fair amount of variety in the series, but the games generally always involve red-bloodied (and haired) adventurer Adol. This time he’s tasked with investigating some mysterious earthquakes and the sudden appearance of strange monsters – which as any good role-playing fan will know means somewhere an end-of-level boss with delusions of grandeur is trying bring about the end of the world.Plot originality is not a strong point then and frankly the dialogue is pretty awful too.

2018-6-26  Ys returns with a brand new adventure for the first time in 8 years! Adol awakens shipwrecked and stranded on a cursed island. There, he and the other shipwrecked passengers he rescues form a village to challenge fearsome beasts and mysterious ruins on the isolated island. Amidst this, Adol begins to dream of a mysterious blue-haired maiden living in an unknown world. GameVortex's review of Ys SEVEN. We had the chance to dive into the new series of Ys games being released on PSP, during this year 's E3 show. It was really exciting to see a company committed to bringing great RPG content to the PSP. For my money, Sony was the undisputed leader for console RPGs, before the release schedule thinned out and the PSP lost its way.

Luckily the game’s action is a lot more interesting though. In fact it’s so good that rather than simply being an irritating distraction you realise the story elements are an indefensible impediment to what could’ve been a minor classic of the genre.Although the specific mechanics have varied over the years the combat in Ys has always been about fast-paced action, not ponderous menu choices. Here you control just one character at a time, with the rest of your team mucking in as computer-controlled allies. They’re much more than the ineffectual cheerleaders you might expect though and even if you do feel they’re not pulling their weight you can switch between any of them with a single button press. AdvertisementWe hope one of sequels does though because the combat system here is far too good to waste on such an inanely uninteresting story. In Short: One of the best action role-players on any portable – if it wasn’t for the appallingly banal plot and characters.Pros: Superb combat system that’s quick and accessible, and despite the unavoidable repetition almost always entertaining. Excellent ally artificial intelligence.Cons: The storytelling is miserably poor, with dull characters and a generic plot. Item synthesis is similarly uninspired and some of the bosses do seem to cheat a bit.Score: 7/10Formats: PSPPrice: £19.99, cert 12Publisher: XSEED GamesDeveloper: Nihon Falcom CorporationRelease Date: 3rd November 2010Thoughts?
