Today Microsoft confirmed that its original Xbox launch title Fuzion Frenzy would be getting a sequel after all-and a properly (or improperly, depending on one's perspective) spelled one at that.Fuzion Frenzy 2 is set for release in the US this holiday season and will feature 40 minigames set on seven different planets, as well as online multiplayer matches and tournaments. If your girlfriend would rather read a book and your buddies are busy watching a real sport, plenty of competition can be found online. Here, too, there is a wealth of options. The simplistic nature of the games helps online performance to be virtually free of lag and cheaters.
The fact that it was tough for me to find games to join during primetime hours a week after its release doesn't bode well for finding players a month or two down the road, however. I can't say enough bad about the production values of. I can only imagine how many Band-Aids the developers needed after cutting so many corners. Take the host, who has two animations, a gaggle of idiotic 'flair' on his costume, and zero lip-synching. During mini-games, he incessantly spouts the same phrases: 'That's gotta hurt, Player 2.' 'Was that a lot of damage, Player 4?'
Design-wise, nothing looks cool here, no matter what your age: The spandex the characters wear, the stupid little vehicles they pilot, and the neon nightmares that are the stages. Overall, Fuzion Frenzy 2's style is akin to a bad Saturday morning cartoon - you know, the ones on WGN because they suck too much to be on national TV. One other positive I haven't touched on are achievement points.
This baby dishes 'em out like candy on Halloween. Earn 50 points every time you win a tournament with a new character. Win an online tournament, and the reward is 100. If you're looking to pad your gamer score, toss King Kong and Bionicle Heroes aside and grab this sucker. Fuzion Frenzy 2 fills a niche on the Xbox 360, but it's more out of necessity than desire - sort of like the kicker on a football team. He isn't the most charismatic or athletic guy on the team, but he's sort of required to be there. It's the only real four-player, easy-to-learn game in the 360's library.
If that's what you're looking for - or you're a seven-year-old whose parents won't buy you Gears of War so you can use potty-mouth online - then by all means rent Fuzion Frenzy 2.
